Excavating the grey area between pop culture and reality...

A Dave Matthews clone no more

I just want to take moment to say how impressed I am with John Mayer's recent transformation from pop star to guitar god. I got to see Mayer perform live in October at the annual Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation benefit concert (courtesy of beef enchilada). His set consisted mostly of pop hits (e.g, "Your Body Is a Wonderland," "No Such Thing," and "Daughters"), but he closed with a fantastic cover of Eric Clapton's "Old Love." I figured that such a foray into blues territory was just a fluke, but I've since seen several of his recent television appearances (including last summer's "Crossroads Guitar Festival" and tonight's "Tsunami Aid" benefit), all of which were more rock-oriented than his usual fare. In addition, he played two December shows in New York City consisting of nothing but classic blues. This certainly appears to indicate that he's embracing this kind of material more and more. I hope he makes plans to lay down some of this stuff in the studio. And soon. None of his commercial releases thus far really reflect this intriguing side of his personality.
